Biographical information

Artist           
Stuart Bigley’s background is as a visual artist.  He has painted for more than 45 years.  During this time he also co-founded and ran the Unison Arts Center in New Paltz, NY.  He studied at the Corcoran College of Art and graduated from Silvermine College of Art.  He is a multi-disciplinary artist focusing on painting, drawing and photography.  Bigley’s painting for over 35 years has been primarily lyrical abstractions in acrylic on canvas and paper.  He has drawn the human figure weekly for over forty years.  In his photography he has moved from film to digital over the past 20 years also using the human figure as his primary point of reference.  Most recently he has begun combining his figure drawing and photographs into mixed media montage.

Stuart Bigley has exhibited his work in solo and group shows at various galleries in the Hudson Valley, Long Island, Connecticut, Washington DC and New York City.

Arts Administrator            
A co-founder of Unison Learning Center, Stuart Bigley was its Executive Director from 1980-2012.  Unison Learning Center is a not-for-profit multi-arts learning and performance center in New Paltz, NY.  In this position he is responsible for coordinating the following:

            • Concert programming (40 per year)
            • Workshop programming (50 per year)
            • Gallery Exhibits (15 per year in two galleries & two sculpture venues)
            • Grants (National Endowment for the Arts, The New York State Council on the Arts, Meet the Composer, Poets & Writers) with staff grants person
            • Fundraising (Individual and Corporate) working with staff  development person and board of directors.
            • Carrying out the policies of Unison’s Board of Directors
            • Directing the staff
            • Overseeing Unison’s graphics and marketing

Producer of Arts Programming            
Stuart Bigley has produced arts programs since 1970 in both the performing and visual arts.  His concert series at Unison has received both recognition and funding from NEA, NYSCA and Meet the Composer.  This series has included several hundred performances over 36 years with some of the most respected artists in their disciplines.  Some of the performers have been: Dave Holland, Natalie Merchant, Susan Werner, John Gorka, Jeremy Steig, Jack DeJohnette, Warren Bernhardt, Odetta Eugene Friesen, Dave Van Ronk, Jessie Winchester, Pink Mainieri, Lila Downs, Pablo Ziegler, Dewey Redman, Michelle Shocked, The Assad Duo, Sharon Isbin, Pepe Romero, Eliot Fisk, The LAGQ, David Starobin, Jon Hendricks, Allen Ginsberg, Mike Manieri, Mose Allison, Randy Brecker, Josh White Jr., Tracy Bonham, Eric Andersen, The Persuasions, Jay Ungar & Molly Mason, Roy “Futureman” Wooten, Robin Williamson, Pauline Oliveros, Bob Berky, Glen Velez, Ashish Khan and David Darling.

Unison’s Arts Workshops have also received NYSCA funding because of its quality and professionalism.  These programs have been in Dance, Music and the Visual Arts.  Programs in Personal Growth, Exercise and the Healing Arts are also part of Unison’s offerings.

Unison’s Gallery presents 9 month long exhibitions in the Unison Gallery each year.   We also  curate 10 exhibits at The Unison Gallery at Water Street Market in New Paltz.  Both of these series are curated by the Unison Gallery Committee and is funded by The New York State Council on the Arts.

Unison sponsors an annual outdoor sculpture exhibition each year since 1998. Unison also curates the sculpture walk at Water Street Market in New Paltz

Stuart Bigley had overall responsibility for programming, contract negotiations, physical logistics, marketing and advertising of Unison’s programs.

Cultural Representative to Japanese Sister City.   Stuart Bigley was chosen by the Mayor of New Paltz to represent the arts and culture in a deligation of ten people that was invited  to Osa Cho, Japan to sign the Sister City agreement in October 1998.
